British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
