The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
